PDP Crisis Over As Makarfi, Sheriff Factions Reconcile With One Another

The protracted crisis bedeviling the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has finally been resolved with Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, and factional chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff, reconciling their differences.
The two factions, which met in Abuja, issued a statement on Tuesday announcing an end to the leadership crisis that rocked the main opposition party for several months.
The statement titled, ‘Rejuvenating The PDP’ and dated 20th September 2016, was jointly signed by Messrs. Makarfi and Sheriff.
It reads:
“This is without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court”.
“At a meeting held this morning between the two of us His Excellency Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and His Excellency Senator Ahmed Makarfi CON, a holistic review of the state of affairs of our great party The PDP was deliberated upon”.
“The meeting was held in a most convivial atmosphere of brotherhood and understanding in the best interest of our great country Nigeria and the sustenance of our multi-party democracy”.
“In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party The PDP since the loss of the 2015 general elections, after 16 years of uninterrupted leadership at the center, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds, and bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can bring sanity to our democratic process, bringing relief to the teeming supporters of our great party The PDP, and to the benefit of our country Nigeria”.
“Based on the above, we have agreed to:
  1. a) Consult widely with all relevant organs of the party
  2. b) Set up a joint committee that will carry out a holistic reconciliation of all aggrieved segments of our party across the country
  3. c) Pursue the vision of the founding fathers of our great party The PDP”


The statement also urged all party members to remain calm and refrain from actions and utterances that could further bring about divisions or disputes in the party.
