Boko Haram: S*icide Bomber Shot D*ad Near IDP Camp (See Photos & Details)

Updated 30 October, 2016
A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber was shot dead by soldiers in Maiduguri as he tried to make his way into the Bakassi IDP camp, which almost came under attack by a female suicide bomber who killed herself and five others on Saturday morning, October 29, Premium Times reports.

According to the report, the suicide bomber was shot dead by vigilant soldiers who opened fire on him causing one of the two bombs around his body to go off.

Alhaji Dan-Batta, a top leader of the Civilian-JTF, told Premium Times: “The male suicide bomber was seen loitering around the back perimeter fence of Bakassi camp at about 9 a.m. He was shot down before he could advance closer to the camp.

One of the bombs he was carrying exploded, but another is still strapped on his body did not explode. The anti-bomb squad operatives are trying to defuse that one.” Dan-Batta added that no other person was reported killed or injured from the explosion.

However, in a statement by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, acting director Army Public Relations, it was gathered that the vest strapped on the bomber failed to detonate. Although, Colonel Usman disclosed that a combined team of military and police Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) have been called to safely detonate the IED.

His statement read: “At about 9.00am this morning, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE deployed behind Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, Damboa road, Maiduguri, on security duty, intercepted and killed a male suicide bomber who had attempted to sneak through the troops’ inner parapet towards the IDP camp.

“The vigilant sentry sighted the bomber and laid in wait until the suicide bomber came close. The sniper instantly shot and killed the terrorists as he tried to force his way to the western flank of the IDP camp fence.

“Unfortunately, the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) vest strapped on the bomber failed to detonate. Consequently, a combined team of military and police Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) have been called to safely detonate the IED. “The situation at the camp and the general area is calm.”

Recall that two bombs went off in Maiduguri on Saturday, including one in front of the same IDP camp. The first occurred at 7am at a coffee drinking spot near the Bakassi IDP camp, along the popular Maiduguri-Biu road, while the second blast occurred at about 7.35 am, near the NNPC fuel depot along Damboa Road, killing a woman and a tricycle rider.
